Laser Hair Removal
Facial and body hair removal has become quite popular in the
last two years. Hair removal was never a very complicated procedure.
Options other than laser hair removal include shaving, waxing,
plucking, electrolysis, and applied depilatory creams. Other than
electrolysis, these methods have to be repeated often. While electrolysis
is a more long-term form of hair removal, it is tedious, expensive
and can be extremely painful.
Now, both men and women can achieve permanent hair reduction through
laser hair removal.
With laser hair removal, most people can successfully get rid
of 80% or more of unwanted hair and are very happy with their
new, smoother look. You can expect that you will need several
treatments to get the best results. The number of treatments will
vary with the areas treated and the type of hair to be removed.
Women most often treat the lip and chin, bikini line, legs, underarms,
and around the navel. Men usually treat the back, shoulders, and
upper arms.
We at MedLasers are dedicated to
excellent results at the best prices. Remember, there
is never a charge for consultations.
About the Procedure
Laser hair removal can take anywhere from five minutes to remove
hair on the lip, to forty-five minutes to remove hair on the
back and shoulders. During the treatment, you may experience a
slight tingling sensation that most patients tolerate well. We
will also cool your skin during the treatments, which also helps
to reduce any discomfort. You can plan to return to work or to your normal daily routine
immediately. It is important that the treated areas are
shielded from the sun. You may use a sun block for this protection.
The laser light achieves hair removal by destroying hair at its
source, the base of the follicle under the skin. The laser will
shoot a concentrated beam of light that passes through your
surface skin and is preferentially absorbed at the base of the
hair shaft. When the light is absorbed, it is converted to heat. Once the base of the hair follicle heats up, the ability
to grow new hair is destroyed.
Only hair in the active phase of growth can be effectively and
permanently removed; just a fraction of your hair follicles are
in the active phase at any time. Most people need multiple
(usually 3-6) treatments to get the desired permanent effect.
The risks involved with laser hair removal are minimal. Your
eyes will be shielded to avoid injury. We have been trained to calibrate the laser to each individual's
skin type as everyone reacts differently to the beam. You
will be provided with any further information needed during
your consultation regarding lasers and any risks associated with
laser hair removal.
At MedLasers, we use both state-of-the-art cooling
systems and anesthetic creams or icing to reduce or eliminate any discomfort.
Our lasers are fast and effective, reducing the cost of each
treatment.

FAQs
How does laser hair removal work?
The laser is attracted to the dark pigment
in the hair color. The hair follicle is heated up and destroyed.
How many treatments? How far apart are the
treatments?
This depends on the area of the body and
the hair that is being treated. Typically, patients have between 3
and 8 treatments that are 4 to 8 weeks in between.
Will the hair be gone after treatment?
Some hair may fall out during treatment; if
not, it may take between 14 and 21 days to notice reduction.
Is it painful?
This procedure is very tolerable. A thin
coat Aloe Vera gel is applied to the area being treated. Cools
packs may be applied to the area before or after treatment to keep
the skin cool.
Is it permanent?
Laser Hair Removal is permanent hair
reduction. According to FDA studies, there is approximately 80% reduction
for up to 2 years.
What type of skin does the laser hair removal
work on?
We have lasers to treat all skin types
including tan and African Americans.
Can I use any other methods in between
treatments?
There should be no tweezing or waxing 2
weeks prior to treatment. We need the root to be there so we can
destroy it. Although, patients need to shave the area treated the
day of treatment so the energy will go straight to the root
instead of the hair.
Is there anything else I cannot do before
or after treatment?
Patients are not to tan 24 hours before or after treatment.
Pre and Post Treatment Instructions
Before
Treatment
1. Do not wax or tweeze for at
least 2 weeks before your treatment.
2. Be sure and let us know of
any changes in your medications. Patients taking Accutane, certain
blood thinners, and with certain rheumatoid diseases may not be
able to be treated.
3. Avoid tanning or
sunbathing for 2 weeks before treatment.
After
Treatment
1. Apply ice if needed. Please
use sun block on all treated areas after your treatment. Avoid
prolonged direct sun exposure or tanning for 48 hours.
2. The area should be treated
like mild sunburn with moisturizers, etc. Wash treated area with a
gentle cleanser and cool water (not hot) twice a day. Avoid
bathing or washing in very hot water. Also avoid irritating
medications or chemicals such as Retin-A, Benzoyl peroxide,
glycolics, alpha-hydroxy, vitamin C products, or astringents for
48 hours after your treatment. Do not exfoliate the treated area
for a week following treatment.
3. Redness normally occurs
following a treatment. This will subside within 1-2 hours; in a
few cases it may last 1-2 days.
4. You may notice your hair
continuing to grow after the treatment. This is normal and after a
week or two, these hairs will fall out.

Laser Hair Removal in People of Color
Until now, people of ethnic backgrounds such as African-American,
Hispanic, Asian, and Middle-Eastern could not safely enjoy the
benefits of laser hair removal. Many have had to suffer the indignities
of inappropriate hair growth, or infections and skin irritation.
NO MORE! At MedLasers, we now have the capability to safely
and effectively remove unwanted hair in all skin types. We have
a new laser that can bypass the skin and still deliver enough
light energy to the base of the hair follicle to achieve permanent
hair reduction. This laser was recently developed at Harvard University
School of Medicine and MedLasers is proud
to have one of the first lasers of this type in our community. Our staff has been
specifically trained to use this laser on ethnic skin for permanent
hair reduction.
MedLasers has the new LYRA-i laser.
