Broken Facial Capillaries
New advances in laser technology now permit the safe and
effective removal of small, spider-like veins on the face and nose
called telangiectasia. These veins are generally part of the aging
process, the result of overexposure to the sun, the result of
hormones, or simply due to genetics. Most people feel that these
capillaries detract from their appearance. With a quick and easy
laser treatment, there is no longer a reason you must live with this
condition.
Not All Lasers Are the Same
Unlike other treatment centers, at MedLasers™ you may need
only one treatment to remove the unwanted veins. MedLasers’
new technology, called the Lyra-i, is designed to treat facial, and
even leg, spider veins quickly and effectively. The Lyra-i was
created to minimize the number of treatments, and reduce or
eliminate any undesirable effects such as bruising.
MedLasers™ makes the Difference
When our staff treats the broken capillaries on your face or
nose, the Lyra-i system allows for precise matching of the laser
energy with the type of blood vessel being treated. Further,
treatments can vary depending on the size of the vessel, the color
of the skin around the vessel, and the depth of the vessel under
your skin. Most of our patients call this new technology "the gentle
laser". Most patients feel nothing during the treatment. It is so
fast and easy that a local anesthetic cream is rarely needed.

About the Procedure
Laser Vein Therapy
Laser vein removal is surprisingly easy, fast, and effective. The
laser light achieves vein removal by destroying the vein without
burning the skin above. The laser will shoot a concentrated beam of
light that passes through your surface skin and is preferentially
absorbed by the hemoglobin in the vein. When the light is absorbed,
it is converted to heat, a process that is similar to what happens
inside a car that has been sitting in the sun. As the sun shines
light into the car, the light is absorbed by the seats, wheel, and
dashboard. It is then converted to heat, making them hot to the
touch. The same happens to the vein. As the vein is gently heated (a
process that occurs in 50 milliseconds or 1/20th of a second), the
walls of the vein collapse and thus blood flow is stopped. Over a
period of four to six weeks, the vein is reabsorbed by the body
and disappears.
The use of a laser for vein removal requires knowledge and
expertise. Our staff is trained to use the best laser and the proper
settings for each size vein. During your treatment, you will feel a
slight tingling sensation as the laser fires. The skin above the
veins will have a reddish, cat-scratch appearance. This generally
disappears over the next two days. Sometimes we apply a local
anesthetic cream over the proposed treatment area if you find the
sensation is uncomfortable. You can expect to return immediately to
your normal daily activities, although we do recommend elevation of
the treated areas that day to enhance the treatment's success.
The risks associated with laser vein therapy are minimal and
similar to the risks of laser hair removal. Your eyes will be
shielded during the treatments. There is a small risk of pigment
changes, which can be reduced by avoiding prolonged sun exposure
during the treatments. We will fully
inform you of the risks associated with laser vein therapy and
answer any questions during your initial consultation. Finally,
because we use state-of-the-art cooling systems, you will find your
treatments low risk and relatively pain-free.
FAQs
What is vein therapy?
Vein therapy is a non-invasive procedure designed to reduce
spider veins and broken capillaries in the legs. This process is
performed by a laser to selectively target veins and reduce them in
size. Numbing cream is applied to the area before treatment.
How often do I have vein therapy?
This depends on the severity of the veins, but generally every 4
to 6 weeks.
How long will the procedure take?
This procedure will take about 15 minutes depending on the veins
and what the patient desires.
Is there any compression?
Stockings may need to be worn after treatment, but the doctor
will instruct the patient on post care.
How much does it cost?
There is a free consultation for evaluation of your individual
needs. Therapy with our laser starts at $75.
Pre and Post Treatment Instructions
Pre-treatment
1.
In order to achieve the best success, we advise the use of
tight-fitting support hose (20 psi) for a week after your treatment.
You should purchase these and bring them with you for your
appointment. Please bring a comfortable pair of shorts to wear
during the procedure.
2.
Avoid active tanning prior to your treatment.
After Care
1.
Avoid prolonged sun exposure or tanning for 48 hours after
your treatments.
2.
Avoid anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin or Advil
for 48 hours after your treatment. You may use Tylenol. Do not
exercise or take a hot bath or shower for 48 hours after your
treatment. You may take a warm bath.
3.
Use the support hose for a week.
4.
Redness normally occurs following a treatment. This will
subside within 1-2 hours; in a few cases it may last 1-2 days.
5.
Blistering rarely occurs but if it does, you will want to
keep the area clean and apply a topical antibiotic ointment.
